Latest Football News As UEFA abolishes away goal Rule
Latest football news as union of European football association UEFA has cancel the away goal rule from all Uefa competitions.
Formally the UEFA away goal rules had been used as a method of tiebreaking in association football and other sports for more than half a century, when teams played each other twice, once at each team’s home field, before it was abolished on Thursday, following proposal for its abolishment by coaches in recent years.
The rule currently
“runs opposite to its original objective,” according to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, who believes it discourages clubs from playing attacking football.
The away goal rule states that the team with more goals at the opponent’s home stadium wins the tie. However with the new order, games that are equal on aggregate score after 90 minutes in the second leg will go straight to extra time and then to a penalty shootout.
