Kemar Roofe should be ‘banned for a long time’ after ‘cowards’ challenge as Rangers striker shares racist abuse following red card vs Slavia Prague

Rangers forward Kemar Roofe has shared racist abuse he suffered on social media after being sent off against Slavia Prague for one of the worst tackles in recent times as the Scottish Premiership champions’ long Europa League journey came to an end.

Just seven minutes after coming on as a substitute, the former Leeds striker was making his way back off after his high tackle on Ondrej Kolar left blood pouring from the goalkeeper’s head.

Chasing a long Goldson pass, Roofe lunged forward with a high boot that flew into the keeper’s face and referee Orel Grinfeld immediately flashed red.

He was shown red as Steven Gerrard’s men chased an equaliser following Peter Olayink opener after just 13 minutes. And things got even worse for Rangers shortly after Roofe’s dismissal.

Just 12 minutes later, Leon Balogun was also handed his marching orders for a second yellow after crunching into Jan Boril.

Gers’ remarkable run was all but killed off as Nicolae Stanciu swept home a stunning free-kick to make it 2-0 on the night.

Revealing the racist abuse he was subjected to online, the 28-year-old said: “I could be here all night screenshoting all of these types of comments.”

Jason Cundy said on Sports Bar that Roofe deserved a lengthy ban for his ‘cowards’ challenge following Rangers’ defeat.

“It’s an appalling challenge,” he told talkSPORT. “They need to throw the book at him. They need to ban him for a long time because it’s a disgusting appalling challenge.

“The keeper couldn’t play on. He knows what he’s doing, he’s followed through with the studs in his head. I’d ban him for eight to 10 games, whatever they throw at him there can be no complaints.

“Go for 10 and they’ll appeal it and he’ll get eight. It’s a cowards challenge because he knows the goalkeeper has got to go with his hands and he knows he’s going to lead with his foot, follows through, and catches him on the head. It’s appalling.”

Cundy’s co-host, Andy Goldstein, added: “I’ve seen a few challenges in football that I call horrific; like you have to turn away. The one that jumps off the page to me is Harald Schumacher on [Patrick] Battiston.

“This one I’ve seen by Kemar Roofe I think is worse than that. It’s despicable and absolutely disgusting. You [Jason] just showed me a picture of the goalkeeper’s face – he’s got a gash on his forehead… half his forehead is open.”
