Chelsea kick their competitive season off with the annual Uefa Super Cup clash as they take on Europa League winners Villarreal in Belfast at Windsor Park.

The Blues beat Manchester City in last season’s Champions League final to reach the competition, while Villarreal edged out Manchester United in a thrilling penalty shootout.

Thomas Tuchel has selected Trevoh Chalobah after a strong pre-season and his side have made a fast start, with Timo Werner and N’golo Kante going close

France international N’Gola Kante clutches the Champions League trophy as he leads Chelsea out on to the pitch at Windsor Park. In all honesty, the trophy is nearly as big as the Blues’ brilliant midfielder, but it’s one he certainly deserves to hold.

Out too are Villarreal, tonight led by Raul Albiol. This is a huge night for the Yellow Submarine, who want to prove they belong on Europe’s biggest stage.

6* – Marcos Alonso forces a corner with an impressive cross into the six-yard box.

The resultant corner leads to Werner forcing a wonderful save from Asenjo with a point blank volley.

50* – Edouard Mendy almost sends his team down the creek without a paddle. He gives the ball away to Dia with a poor kick and leaves his two centre-backs scrambling.

60* – Alberto Moreno arrives late for a tackle on Pulisic and sticks out a leg to bring the Chelsea winger down.

Alonso dinks the set piece into the box where Kurt Zouma climbs over Albiol to win the header. He puts his effort wide of the near post but is punished for a foul on the Villarreal captain.

65* – Time for some substitutes. Thomas Tuchel makes a triple change bringing on Andreas Christensen, Jorginho and Mason Mount. Kante, Werner and Zouma are the men replaced

69* – Trevoh Chalobah has come into his own as the game has gone on. He makes a vital interception in his own six-yard box to defend a cross and then clears a rebound from a Trigueros shot.
