Watch Liverpool vs Aston Villa

After a disappointing result in the Champions League vs Real Madrid , the Reds return to top flight action this afternoon as they take on the Villains at Anfield.

It’s been a while since the champions played at home and have failed to win their last six fixtures on Merseyside. Jurgen Klopp is hoping for that run to end today.

2* – Villa make a positive start. They’re quickly on the front foot and a long ball over the top of the Liverpool defence is latched onto by McGinn. He turns away from Kabak, who gives away a free kick on the right, just outside the box..

5* – The first attack of note from Liverpool as Fabinho lifts a pass up to Salah. He feeds Alexander-Arnold, whose low cross is deflected behind for a corner.

15* – Now Firmino goes close. Alexander-Arnold drifts forward from right-back before sliding a pass into the striker’s feet. He turns and drills a low shot just wide of the far post from about 20 yards out.

19* – Liverpool work the ball patiently around the edge of the Villa box until Alexander-Arnold fizzes a low cross into the six-yard box. Firmino attacks it at the near post but the flag is quickly up for offside.

24* – Jota skips away from Cash on the left and is then tugged back by Konsa, who goes into the book.

27* – There’s a pause in play as Luiz goes down and requires some attention from the Villa physios.

30* – Luiz, having looked like he was going to be replaced by Ramsey, is now going to continue. It’s not clear what the problem was but the midfielder was down for quite a while.

33* – Close again! Jota meets the corner with a header from a few yards out but can only send the ball brushing past the roof of the net. Liverpool are knocking on the door.

37* – Firmino does well to burst down the left flank, get to the byline and cut back for Salah, who curls his shot over the bar. Martinez hasn’t been troubled enough from a Liverpool perspective.

It’s happened again at Anfield! For all of Liverpool’s dominance and chances to take the lead, it’s the visitors who strike the first blow. Watkins is picked out in the box, gets the ball out of his feet and hits a low shot with his left foot which sneaks past Alisson. He should do better, but Villa won’t care.

56* – Liverpool win a corner on the left, which is curled into the box by Robertson. Mings heads away, but only as far as Salah, who has a well-struck volley blocked.

Moments later, Phillips flicks a long ball into the path of Jota, who drags a shot wide of the far post.

There’s the equaliser! Liverpool work the ball down the left and Robertson is played through in the box. He hits a powerful shot which is well saved by Martinez.

65* – Liverpool try to settle things down after a slightly shaky period following their equaliser. After a spell of possession, though, Milner is booked for a late challenge.

73* – Robertson lifts the set piece towards the back post, where Phillips attacks it. Martinez is out confidently to punch clear.

76* –Mane replaces Firmino as Liverpool search for a winner.

85* – Watkins is booked for clattering into Thiago.

87* – Liverpool haven’t really built on their equaliser and the game feels as if it’s almost petering out. A draw’s an improvement on recent results at Anfield, but hardly ideal for the champions.

What a strike! That might be a huge goal for Liverpool. The chance seems to have gone when Martinez makes a superb save to deny Thiago from close range. But the move is kept alive, and Alexander-Arnold whips a superb shot into the far corner from the edge of the box.
