Serial Europa League winner Unai Emery welcomes old foes Arsenal to the Estadio de la Ceramica for the first leg of Villarreal’s Europa League semi-final clash on Thursday.

The Yellow Submarine defeated Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 on aggregate to advance to the final four, whereas the Gunners swept aside Slavia Prague 5-1 over two legs.

The Gunners produced an emphatic performance against Slavia Prague in the previous round to reach the final four, despite their volatile swings in form, with Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe both playing starring roles.

4* – Decent pressing from Arsenal early on, but Villarreal very comfortable in possession

5* – GOAL! TRIGUEROS

Arsenal behind! Great work from Villarreal down the left-hand side from Chukwueze. The ball finds itself at the feet of Trigueros, who slams the ball home with his left foot.

8* – A strong run from Pedraza down the left brings a decent cross, but well smothered by Leno.

10* – Arsenal is creating something here

15* –  A little sloppy from Arsenal, needlessly giving the ball away when under no pressure from Villarreal.

22* – Arsenal having joy down the wings via Pepe and Saka. Their pace can cause Villarreal’s defenders problems.

Villarreal 2-0 up, and looking worthy of it. Arsenal had moments of control in the game, especially down the wings through Pepe and Saka, but overall the Spanish side have been in control.

Both goals came from players being left unmarked in the Arsenal box. Villarreal’s full-backs have bombed forward at every possibility, and late in the first half caused a lot of issues. Defensively, Arsenal have been lacklustre, and it wouldn’t surprise you if Villarreal add a third in the second half.

55* – Arsenal now posing much more of a threat, pushing men forward, but leaving themselves exposed to the Villarreal counter attack.

66* – Arsenal now need to try and limit any further damage from Villarreal.

68* – Should’ve been 3-0. Moreno is slipped in by Coquelin, but his shot is directly at Leno, who parries it over the crossbar from blank range.

73* – Goal Penalty for The Gunners this time. Saka cleverly hangs his foot out, and makes sure he gets contact from Trigueros.

85* – Looks a very serious injury for Capoue, as he’s leaving on a stretcher.

88* – Villarreal now pushing forward again in search of a third, Parejo with nice movement inside the Arsenal box, but just ran out of pitch.
